Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia lying on the southern side of the Himalaya mountain range, bordered by China and India. Nepal is about 800 km long from northwest to southeast and has a total area of 147181 sq. km. Its terrain is mostly mountainous, with only the narrow southern strip consisting of plains. The mountainous north contains eight of the world's ten highest mountains, including the highest, Mount Everest.

However, being a Nepali myself I have selected the places on my own discretion so, most of the other popular places to visit in Nepal, especially ones that are advertised a lot on other sites may not be enlisted below… so now… here we have ten of the most life-defining travel destinations in Nepal.

1. Everest Base Camp 

Everest Base Camp is one of the most popular trekking destinations among the trekkers who would opt for an incredible trekking experience while enjoying its natural splendor. Trek to Everest Base Camp is one the most renowned trekking trail in the world. Four of the world’s six tallest peaks namely Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu and Mt. 3. Chitwan National Park 

The Chitwan National Park is home to at least 43 species of mammals. The "King of the Jungle" is the Bengal Tiger. The alluvial floodplain habitat of the Terai is one of the best tiger habitats anywhere in the world. Since the establishment of Chitwan National Park the initially small population of about 25 individuals has increased to 70–110 in 1980. In some years this population has declined due to poaching and floods. In a long-term study carried out from 1995–2002 tiger researchers identified a relative abundance of 82 breeding tigers and a density of 6 females per 100 km2. 

Leopards are most prevalent on the peripheries of the park. They co-exist with tigers, but being socially subordinate are not common in prime tiger habitat.[9] In 1988, a clouded leopard was captured and radio-collared outside the protected area, and released into the park but did not stay.
Wild Animals
Other felids reported from the protected area comprise fishing cat, jungle cat, leopard cat, and the rare marbled cat. Chitwan is considered to have the highest population density of sloth bears with an estimated 200 to 250 individuals. Smooth-coated otters inhabit the numerous creeks and rivulets. olden jackals are common. 

Bengal foxes, Spotted linsangs, palm civets, Large and Small civets, several species of mongoose, honey badgers and yellow-throated martens roam the jungle for prey. wild dogs are rare. Striped hyenas prevail on the southern slopes of the Churia Hills.

4. Gosaikunda Lake

The Gosaikunda lake is located at an altitude of about 4380 m. It is surrounded by mountains on almost all sides and a great ensemble of nine other lakes accompany the Goisaikunda. Every year during Janai Purnima in August, hundreds of Hindu pilgrims visit for a holy bath in the lake. The large rock at the center of the lake is said to be the remains of a Shiva shrine and it is also claimed that channel carries water from the lake directly to the tank at the Kumbheshwar Temple in Patan in the Kathmandu valley.


From Syabru, the trails generally ascend across forests. On the way you will also come across a monastery and a cheese factory. Above here, the trail climbs through tall fir stands before emerging above the tree line for increasingly panoramic views of the high peaks and finally entering the barren upper reaches of the Trishuli river, where glacial moraines and rockslides have left a string of half a dozen lakes.

5. Panch Pokhari

Panch Pokhari is named after 5 holy ponds of great religious significance in the north-eastern part of Sindhupalchowk district, Panch Pokhari is one of the new and unspoilt trekking destinations in Nepal. The route offers a beautiful Himalayan view and pristine nature with distinct culture. Panch Pokhara is situated at an elevation of about 4100m above sea level. This is a famous Hindu pilgrimage site in Nepal. Panch Pokhari trekking lies to the north of the Kathmandu valley; the chain of peaks called Jugal Himal that includes Dorje Lakpa (6966m) Madiya (6257m) and Phurbi Chhyachu (6,637 m).
 This is a remote and unfrequented region, despite being close to Kathmandu. The Trekking offers a combination of rich cultural heritage, unsurpassed beauty and diversity of flora and fauna. There are few villages and no hotels on this route. In some places, the route passes through villages and settlements of different ethnic people like Tamangs, Newars, Sherpas, Brahmins, Chhetris, and Gurungs. Since teahouses are not available along the route, camping trek is operated. Most part of the route is entirely free of human settlement. Panch Pokhari is one of the less explored trekking routes.

6. Khaptad National Park 

Khaptad National Park in west Nepal is the Home of Late Khaptad Swami, the renowned scholar and a hermit. The park with rolling hills of grasslands and forests of subtropical, temperate and sub alpine vegetation, is also a rich natural habitat. The park boasts of 224 species of medicinal herbs and offers excellent bird watching opportunities, with 270 species of birds, the common ones being different varieties of impheyan pheasant, partrides, flycatchers, bulbuls, cuckoos and eagles. Animals in the park are barking deer, wild boar, ghoral, Himalayan black bear, yellow-throated marten, rhesus monkey and langur monkey.

 The park also offers religious sightseeing at Tribeni on the way to its headquarters. There are several historical temples surrounding this area and an annual celebration of Ganga Dashhara is held here every Jestha Purnima. Another religious site is Sahashra Linga at 3200 m, the highest point of the park. Other religious areas in the park include Ganesh Temple, Nagdhunga, and Kedardhunga. These areas are ideal places for meditation. Towards the northeast of the park is Khaptad Lake where a festival is held every August and September.

7. Rara Lake 

Rara Lake Treks is one of the most famous camping trekking destinations in Nepal which offers the remote wilderness of western Nepal and a superb experience of nature and a visit to Rara lake. Rara Lake is the largest lake of Nepal, situated in Mugu district in the far western region of Nepal, near Gam Ghadi (district-headquarters of Mugu) and Talcha airstrip. It takes around 3 to 4 days of walking to reach Rara from Jumla.
The surface is around 8 square kilometer and the perimeter 9 kilometer. The length of the lake is 5 kilometers and it is 2 kilometers wide, the altitude around 3060 meter and the max. depth is 167 meter. Trekking in Rara Lake offers the best scenery on the north – western most side of Nepal. The peaceful surroundings are enhanced by the reflection of Ghurchi Lekh in its blue waters. Chankheli peak (4,201 m) looms in the north across the deep Mugu Karnali gorge. The trail is very much "off the beaten path" and affords glimpses of the distinct culture of the local people.
8. Upper Mustang


Upper Mustang is the Trans-Himalayan mountain area having the great influence of Tibetan culture and lifestyle. This 17 days Upper Mustang Trekking route covers the most natural, spiritual and auspicious values of west Himalayan region of Nepal. The trail route covers some tributaries like Kaligandaki coming from Tibet, Kagbeni and many more. 

Explore the amazing landscape and built structures like monasteries, local stone houses etc. Kagbeni (2,858), Syanbochen (3,475m), Lo-Mangthang (3,810m) are the living images which reflects the society of the thousands years back to present. 9. Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) 

The Annapurna Base Camp trek is one of the most popular treks in the Annapurna region. The trail goes alongside terraced rice paddies, lush rhododendron forests and high altitude landscapes with the Annapurna Range in view most of the times. The setting of Annapurna Base Camp at 4130 m is unique and incredibly spectacular, set amidst the majestic peaks of Annapurna I (8091 m), Annapurna South (7219 m), Machapuchhre (6993 m) and Hiunchuli (6441 m). The Annapurna Base Camp Trek takes 7 to 12 days, depending on your itinerary and length of walking days. 

The itinerary presented here takes 12 days, starting from Nayapul (a 1 1/2 hour drive from Pokhara) and going north up to Ghorepani and the famous viewpoint at Poon Hill. From Ghorepani you go eastward to Chomrong and then north again entering the Modi Kola Valley which leads up to the Base Camp. Many people trek the circuit Nayapul-Ghorepani-Ghandruk-Nayapul, which is very rewarding in itself. This trek can easily be done with children as well. You can return via Jhinu Danda and give your tired muscles a well deserved rest in the delightful hot springs. Upon your return it is worthwhile visiting one of the Gurung villages of Ghandruk or Landruk. 


The lodges in the Annapurna Trekking Region are well equipped with extensive menus ranging from the typical Nepali dahl bath (rice with lentils) to pizza and chau mein. Hot showers are readily available as well. If you are planning to trek in the winter months please check with a travel agency to confirm which lodges are open. 

10. Tilicho Lake
 Tilicho Lake is the highest lakes in the world, it rests in the stunning location in the Annapurna region at an altitude of 5,000 meters. It was also the site of one of the highest ever altitude scuba dives in the year 2000. Tilicho Lake collects the glacial melt of the entire northern slopes of Annapurna and Thorung.
This trek begins from Besisahar which goes along the Marshyangdi River, with great views of Manaslu and Himal Chuli to the east. We then skirt Tilicho Lake from the north where we will camp for a night. From our camp by the shores of the lake, we climb up to the Mesokonto La where we are rewarded with the first views of the Kali Gandaki Valley. Along the trail we will go upstream to Kagbeni and up a side valley to the shrine at Muktinath, sacred to Hindus and Buddhists alike.
